Hazard maps highlights vulnerable areas at risk of disasters such as volcanic eruptions and earthquakes. These maps are used to spot places at risk of flooding, landslides, lava flows, debris flows and the like.
In this map of Batangas, the areas that are at risk of earthquakes, volcanic tsunami and ballistic projectiles are highlighted. Volcanic tsunamis are generated by a variety of mechanisms, including volcano-tectonic earthquakes, slope instabilities, pyroclastic flows, underwater explosions, shock waves and caldera collapse. While ballistic projectiles are rocks that an erupting volcano may hurl into the air.
